La experiencia de aprender inglés comienza como un viaje que uno nunca puede prever a dónde nos llevará y después de quince años experimentando el idioma en su máxima expresión, me siento honrado de decir que las experiencias de la vida son mucho más agradables y motivadoras cuando el inglés juega un papel en ellas. Para ser honesto, las experiencias culturales son un reto y la mejor parte de intercambiar tu forma de ver el mundo así como de reconocer a otras personas a tu alrededor es que, sorprendentemente, hay muchos puntos de vista comunes que pensabas que diferenciaban a todos pero que en realidad no lo hacen. Personalmente, aprecio el año que tuve la suerte de vivir en la llamada "mayor democracia", la India, y cada día que pasé en este hermoso país fue una confirmación más de que nuestras dos naciones son muy parecidas.

No me malinterpreten, por supuesto que cada país es un mundo particular y se enfrenta a realidades individuales. Sin embargo, la gente de la India es muy trabajadora y tiene un corazón increíblemente bondadoso, al igual que la gente de Colombia. Recuerdo una vez que mi novia y yo queríamos visitar un pequeño pueblo popular por una región de manglares que había, pero necesitábamos tomar diferentes buses en diferentes pueblos en el camino para llegar, en algún momento nos perdimos porque no sabíamos que bus tomar y desafortunadamente la gente del lugar no hablaba inglés, finalmente después de preguntar a mucha gente encontramos a una pareja que casualmente iba al mismo lugar que nosotros y nos guiaron durante el resto del viaje, fueron muy amables y acogedores y disfrutamos de una divertida conversación, comimos juntos y por la tarde nos indicaron el autobús preciso que nos llevó de vuelta a nuestra ciudad.

Quiero concluir diciendo que cuando uno se relaciona con personas de diferentes culturas es importante entender las diferencias como oportunidades para ampliar la comprensión del mundo, y a pesar de que las barreras lingüísticas son una preocupación importante, no deberían ser un obstáculo para exponerse a momentos que cambian la vida.

Cultural experiences through English

The experience of learning English starts like a journey one can never foresee where it will take us and after fifteen years experiencing the language at its fullest, I feel honored to say that life experiences are much more enjoyable and motivating when English plays a role in them. To be honest, cultural experiences are challenging and the best part of exchanging your way to see the world as well as recognizing other people around you is that surprisingly, there are so many common points of view that you thought would set everyone apart but actually don't. Personally,  I cherish the year I had the fortune to experience in the so-called "greatest democracy" India and every day I spent in this beautiful country was yet another confirmation that our two nations are very alike.

Please do not get me wrong, of course each country is a particular world and face individual realities. Nevertheless, people in India are very hard-working and incredibly kind-hearted, just like poeple in Colombia. I remember once my girlfriend and me wanted to visit a small village popular for a mangrove region there to be visited, but needed to take different buses in different towns on the way to get there, at some point we were lost because we did not know which bus to take and unfortunately people at the place did not speak English, finally after asking many people we found a couple that were coincidentally going to the same place like us and guided us through the rest of the trip, they were so friendly and welcoming and we enjoyed a fun conversation, had lunch together and by the evening they pointed the precise bus which took us back to our city.

I want to conclude by saying that when one interacts with people from different cultures it's important to understand the differences as opportunities to widen the understanding of the world, and despite language barriers are an important concern, they should not be an obstacle to expose yourself to life-changing moments.
